Position Vacant: Principal Environmental Planner

The position

To join and support our growing consulting team, we are looking for an excellent Principal Environmental Planner to join our planning and approvals team. We are open to candidates based in NSW, Vic, Qld or WA. Candidates should have experience in environmental planning and a strong and genuine interest in the waste and recycling industry.

What you can expect

You will support our MRA’s dynamic and multidisciplinary team of professionals, including engineers, scientists, economists, planners, lawyers, social scientists and educators in the delivery of quality project outcomes for our clients. You can expect to be working in a team on projects for the private and the government sectors. You can expect to deliver projects including development applications, Environmental Impact Statements/ Statement of Environment Effects, Waste Management Plans, Environmental Management Plans, stakeholder management, and client liaising. You can also expect to be challenged.

You need to be resilient, flexible and able to prioritise and multitask as the role entails:

  • Leading bids and proposals for future work
  • Client management and business development
  • Project management of small, medium and large planning projects
  • Report writing, subconsultant management and stakeholder liaison
  • Problem solving and project adaptation

Key capacity and skills

Required:

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Urban Planning or relevant degree in Science or Environment
  • Min. 10 yrs. experience in Environmental Impact Assessment and/or Development Applications
  • Thorough understanding of Planning Policy and Regulation in NSW, Victoria or Queensland
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and delivery of projects
  • Profound and professional communication skills
  • Very strong report writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and in an innovative manner 
  • Excellent time management and prioritising skills
  • Practical, client focused and highly motivated personality
  • Cultural fit and shared vision are key attributes. We want to continue to grow our team around the right people
  • Australian Citizenship or rights to work in Australia

Preferred:

  • Experience in waste management, infrastructure, or industrial development applications 
  • Experience in complex approvals e.g. EIS or EES applications

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of this role include:

  • Assisting the planning team in:
    • Managing small, medium and large projects
    • Environmental impact assessment
    • Submission of planning and licensing applications 
    • Compliance and environmental management documentation
    • Client advisory services
    • Managing and compiling proposals for future work
    • Preparing high quality reports for external clients on time and within budget
    • Preparing responses to development application/licensing submissions
    • Leading meetings and stakeholder engagement activities 
    • Research (e.g. into legislation, waste management, site characteristics or management of potential impacts)
  • Working with the broader MRA team to:
    • Assist with time-sensitive projects or proposals
    • Assist with research and business development for waste and recycling
