Bin Trim – creating change, one business at a time
MRA has wrapped up its 2014-2015 ‘Bin Trim Business Grants’ project, which is part of the NSW Government Waste Less Recycle More $465.7 million program.
Along with 26 other Bin Trim providers, we have visited 8,000+ small to medium enterprises (SME) across NSW. SMEs are responsible for 45 per cent of commercial and industrial (C&I) waste going to landfills in Sydney.
Under Bin Trim each SME received one-on-one waste advice, training and an improvement plan to increase their recycling rates (and where possible, save money).
Bin Trim recipients were also eligible for $25k in funding to pay for new recycling equipment.
MRA assessors completed close to 1,500 Bin Trim assessments and improved recycling rates by an average of 15% and 20%.
NSW C&I recovery rates (60%) are well behind construction and demolition (C&D) recovery rates (75%). The NSW EPA developed Bin Trim as one mechanism to drive improvement in the SME C&I space.
MRA can confirm that Bin Trim has, and is making, real improvements to recycling rates, waste knowledge and diversion of waste from landfill.
‘This project is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.’
